The Mojave Desert Old Car Buy Back and Scrap Program will pay $1,000 for a qualified operating and registered 1997 or older vehicle. The Old Car Buy Back and Scrap Program is sponsored by the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District. This Voluntary Accelerated Vehicle Retirement (VAVR) Program is not operated by the State of California. The program is currently contracted to be run by Environmental Engineering Studies, Inc. (EES).
If you find your vehicle does not meet the program requirements you might want to consult with the Burea of Automotive Repair (BAR). Under BAR's Consumer Assistance Program, owners of qualifying vehicles that fail a smog check are given the option of voluntarily retiring their vehicle rather than repairing it.
